The current cost of a genuine Series 1 E-Type roadster is such that ownership is simply out of reach for most enthusiasts. Fortunately, there is an excellent and practical alternative – The Challenger.
A replica that was manufactured by Triple C from 1985 to 1992 with the approval of Jaguar. Using moulds taken from a Series 1 3.8 it is dimensionally accurate and later cars used Jaguar engines and suspension. Instrumentation and brightwork are also Jaguar sourced.
In addition to affordability, other advantages over the original include less corrosion with a glass fibre body and galvanised chassis, improved braking using XJ6 components, better cruising and fuel economy with overdrive or 5-speed gearboxes and more modern electrical systems.
One has even been modified to accommodate a driver 6’ 8” tall!
These cars are eminently useable with many owners having under-taken extensive European journeys and others used year-round as everyday transport.
Quality and usability are perhaps underlined by the fact that several owners have retained their Challengers since building them in the 80s and 90s.
